Everything you need to know about Grading system and Types of Gynecomastia

Are you planning to undergo gynecomastia surgery ? In this article, you will get to know about the surgery and outcomes for the same. The Gynecomastia cost is Rs.65,000 to Rs 95,000 anddepends on the amount of fat that needs to be taken.

Grading system

Different approaches are used to grade gynecomastia. The most common one is Simon’s grading which goes to the year 1973. According to this grade, there are 3 different categories as the loose skin and breast tissue amount on the breast.

      Grade I

Small enlargement but no presence of excess skin

      Grade IIa

Moderate enlargement but excess skin is not there

      Grade IIb

Moderate enlargement with minor skin excess

      Grade III

Marked enlargement with excess skin in greater amounts. Moreover, it gives the appearance of a female-like breast.

One of the other systems is Rohrich. It was developed in 2003 and the grading in done on 4 basis:

      Grade I

Minimal hypertrophy (< 250 g) without ptosis

      Grade II

Moderate hypertrophy (250 to 500 g) without ptosis

      Grade III

Severe hypertrophy (> 500 g) with grade I ptosis

      Grade IV

Severe hypertrophy with grade II or grade III ptosis

Both of them are used all across the globe. Simon's grading is more commonly used as it is fairly easy to understand. Along with the grading system, there is the skin tone factor. The excess skin is referred to as the loose skin which is present on the top of breast tissue. The excess skin is referred to as linear progression from 1 to 3 grades and skin tone is not dependent on it. Here is the revised grading for your understanding.

Grade IT

       Small enlargement

       No skin excess

        Normal skin tone

Grade 1L

       Small enlargement

       No skin excess

        Poor skin tone

Grade IIAT

       Moderate enlargement

       No skin excess

       Normal skin tone

Grade IIAL

       Moderate enlargement

       No skin excess

        Poor skin tone

Grade IIBT

       Moderate enlargement

       Minimal Skin excess

       Normal skin tone

Grade IIBL

       Moderate enlargement

       Minimal Skin excess

        Poor skin tone

Grade IIIT

       Marked enlargement

       Lot of excess skin

       Normal skin tone

Grade IIIL

       Marked enlargement

       Lot of excess skin

       Poor skin tone

The word ‘L’ stands for anxiety which is referred to as poor skin tone. Through the revised grading it will help to tell about the surgical results which help to reshape the skin in the right approach. Additionally, the patient's history is also checked to understand the entire condition better.

Understanding the patient condition

During the consultation, the patient's condition will be understood properly and then accordingly the treatment is strategized. Every patient is different from each other, so the grading system will help to determine which technique will be beneficial. It is better that you meet an experienced surgeon so that the treatment plan is determined properly.

Make sure that you look for one who is experienced and doing the surgery for many years. Only through this approach, you can be satisfied with the results.
