Eminent Hindi Author Kamal Kishore Goyenka Selected for the Vyas Samman Award

Famous Hindi litterateur Kamal Kishore Goyenka has been chosen for the prestigious Vyas Samman for his book 'Premchand Kee Kahaniyo Kaa Kaalkramanusar' which is a critical study of short stories of the twentieth century writer.

The 70 year author does not have works in Hindi shayari or poems but has around 50 books to his credit, out of these half of the books are related to Premchand who is regarded as the ‘emperor of novels.’ Goyenka was born in October 11, 1938 in Buland Shahar district in Uttar Pradesh.

Organized by the K Birla Foundation in 1991, the Vyas Samman award is given every year for extraordinary work in Hindi literature published amid the last 10 years by any citizen of India. The award money is of 2.5 lakhs at present.  The first award was first given to Dr. Ram Vilas Sharma but he did not accept the money of the award instead with an additional amount, the award money was given to the National Book Trust to publish and distribute books for various literary programmes. The K.K. Birla Foundation was created in 1991 by Krishna Kumar Birla in Delhi. Its mission is to advance literature (particularly Hindi writing), education, arts and social work. The Foundation provides grants on regular basis to strengthen the programmes.  It consistently gets said in the media for the awards it presents, one of them being the Vyas Samman award. 'Premchand Kee Kahaniyo Kaa Kaalkramanusar,' distributed in 2012, is a study of short stories of Premchand in chronological order, viewed as one of the first Hindi essayists of the mid twentieth century.

"The book is a unique research work because for the first time the author has studied all available short stories of Premchand according to the chronological order of their writing," the K. K Birla Foundation said. The selection for the prize is made by a committee which is headed by former head of University of Lucknow’s Hindi Department and eminent writer, Suraj Prasad Dixit. The Foundation said that the readers can easily understand the psychological and sociological world of the characters created by Premmchand in his short stories.
